Hey everyone! I wanted to share with you about my recent trip to New York city. I was in town for a special bloggers conference hosted by Family Dollar. I got into some good things and I really had a blast! I was there for about four days. And you know what? I'd never been to New York city so I had a lot of exploring to do.
I'm the type of person that likes to get lost in a city to figure it out. Now this can be a bit intimidating at times. But, I actually did a good job. I picked a hotel in New Jersey so that it would force me to quickly figure out the lay of the land. I ended up taking three ferry rides, a train and then a bus to my hotel on the first day. The bus driver missed a stop and I ended up in an unknown neighborhood at about 9 p.m.! The Chicago in me was scared and thinking how to defend myself. But once I saw all the little old ladies out walking their toy dogs, I relaxed quite a bit! I ended up walking the last mile to my hotel and trust me! Now I will always know my way around New York city and New Jersey!
The VIP blogger event was why I was really in town. My awesome mentor Candace Corey is one of Family Dollars featured bloggers and makeup artists! They actually featured her in Ebony magazine! So I came along with her to get a taste of how the big time bloggers make it happen. And boy did I learn a lot!
We were able to chat and ask questions of many beauty company's executives and key creative teams. I had a really enlightening conversation with the woman who literally writes the packaging for all the Creme of Nature products. I also had my scalp analyzed by one of Organic Root Stimulators key educators. And wow is all I have to say about that! We were also given tons and tons of products to try. So much so that I had to go get a extra suitcase to bring it all home! So you know I am already planning some really great blog posts with a lot of the products I was able to pick up during my stay in New York.
Overall I had an amazing time at the bloggers conference and I learned a ton! While I was in New York, I was able to get in some shopping and sight seeing. New York is just all the way live, there is no other way to put it. For the Chicagoans, it was basically like a never ending Oak Street or a never ending Michigan Avenue. Just about any brand that is a serious brand seems to have a location in New York.
There was more shopping than I think anyone on this planet could ever care to do! I don't buy items in person too often since I'm over 6 feet tall. But I was disappointed that the Vince Camuto store, which is my favorite shoe brand, didn't carry my size in store. But I digress...I also visited the NARS flagship on 413 Bleeker and the Makeup Forever store that I usually call to get orders mailed to me.
H&M was like a club. It made you want to buy things. I think they borrowed some strategy from Las Vegas. The super hyped up atmosphere just makes people want to spend spend spend. Hey! It worked on me! I definitely landed some good deals :)
While I was there, I also got into some shoots. I did about two shoots. They were both pretty fabulous. I came prepared to shoot. See my little bag pictured above? That's my small Stilazzi set bag. And it fit all that stuff in the picture right below it. It was literally like a clown car. But it was the size of a purse! I was able to be prepared to work on any face. And I was! From porcelain complexions to ebony complexions. I was ready for whatever sat in my chair.
I'm really excited about the shoot that I did literally a few hours before I got on the plan to come back to Chicago. See the screenshot in the first picture of this post? That was a little preview of some of of the images. This particular team was ready to make it happen. The images will be submitted for publication in a magazine so fingers crossed that I'll be coming back to you to let you know which images were published sometime in the future!
All of the models were New York agency-repped models. One of them said to me, "You must be really busy during fashion week." That really made me feel good and messed my head up at the same time. I would love to have the opportunity to do makeup for New York fashion week! So I suppose when that dream materializes, I'll have to revisit this post and remember my first time shooting in New York and truly and seriously thinking about all of those things. Thanks for reading everyone! I'll chat with you again soon :)
